If you’re receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Colorado, you may wonder whether you can still work part-time without losing your benefits. The answer is yes, but there are strict rules about how much you can earn and how work activity is reported. Understanding these rules will help you avoid putting your benefits at risk.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

SSDI Work Rules in Colorado

1. Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA)

  • In 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) considers earnings above $1,550 per month ($2,590 if blind) as Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA).
  • If your income exceeds this limit, your SSDI benefits may stop.

2. Trial Work Period (TWP)

  • The SSA allows you to test your ability to work while still receiving benefits.
  • Any month you earn over $1,110 (2025 figure) counts as a trial work month.
  • You can have up to 9 trial work months within a 60-month period.

3. Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE)

  • After your trial work period, you enter a 36-month window where benefits can stop and restart depending on your monthly earnings.
  • If your income stays under the SGA limit, you continue to receive SSDI.

4. Reporting Requirements

  • Colorado residents on SSDI must report all work activity to the SSA.
  • This includes wages, hours worked, and changes in job status.

Example: Working Part-Time in Colorado
  • If you earn $1,200 per month working part-time, you’re below the 2025 SGA limit.
  • You can still receive SSDI benefits as long as you continue to meet disability requirements.
  • If you earn $1,600 per month, this exceeds SGA and may result in losing benefits after your trial work protections end.

Tips for Working While on SSDI
  • Track your monthly income carefully.
  • Keep copies of pay stubs and employment records.
  • Report earnings to the SSA promptly.
  • Speak with a disability attorney if you’re unsure how work may affect your case.
